Profile

I am an independent consulting engineer based at Rotterdam, The Netherlands and active in the field of room and electro acoustics. The scope of work I perform comprises:
  • acoustic design of rooms (concert and opera halls, theatres, auditoriums, large spaces, etc.): determination shape of and material use for rooms, calculations and/or simulations, creating reports and/or specifications;
  • acoustic and functional design of sound systems: creating block diagrams and descriptions of systems, performing calculations and/or simulations, creating reports and/or specifications;
  • tuning and commissioning of sound systems;
  • performing room and electro acoustic measurements, both for investigation prior to a project or because of problems as for verification after commissioning, creating reports with results and when required verification to standards and indicating recommendations;
  • on site consultancy: a thorough study is not always required. Sometimes one simply needs practical solutions or advise with an explanation, also in order to keep the costs limited. On site or from drawing acoustic measures can be discussed with an architect or technical staff. This can be ideal for rooms with a lesser acoustic complexity, rooms where due to architectural reasons only limited measures can be taken, location theatre, private homes etc.
  • specialism: variable acoustics for theatres, concert and opera halls by means of reverberation amplification (creating negative acoustic absorption).
Major companies I work for are:
  • Event Acoustics (a division of the AMPCO Flashlight group of companies)
  • FACE-BE (formerly known as Ampco Belgium)
Collaboration:
  • In the field of room acoustics (especially for performing arts) there is a mutual collaboration with Kahle Acoustics at Brussels.
Memberships:
  • AES (Audio Engineering Society)
  • NAG (Acoustic Society of The Netherlands)
  • VPT (Dutch Society of Stage Engineering); within this society a member of the workgroups Sound Design and Theatre Buildings

Hermitage Amsterdam Kerkzaal The Netherlands 2010 - 2012 After remarks about the acoustics in the Kerkzaal (Churchhall) it was decided to make an education project for the Theatre Academy to investigate the situation. Students of the course "Theatre Engineering" (OTT) performed measurements, analysed those, reported the results and gave recommendations for improvements. As the situation was quite complex additional consultancy was given about acoustic provisions and use of the room (e.g. set-up of the musicians). In a later stage Kahle Acoustics was involved which let to a live test where temporary provisions were investigated. After this test acoustic provisions were designed in collaboration with Hans van Heeswijk Architects.
